I grew up in New Hampshire and have lived for 35 years out West.
Finally this year, I got to see some real fall foliage. Philly, as you may know, features parks and gardens and green spaces and wetlands galore, starting the day of my arrival with Maple Acres Farm in the Chestnut Hill area.
Here my friend and I went all-in for the pick-your-own-zinnias offering—ten bucks for a hundred blooms (!), as November was nearing, the season was ending, and the flowers were beginning to fade.
We visited Longwood Farms, an hour-plus outside the city, concentrating on The Meadow.
We also hit most of the other Longwood areas, including the fab chrysanthemum festival in the greenhouse. I tend to think flowers should be left alone, not coaxed into torturous, twee arrangements; draped with supersonic flashing laser lights; or festooned with extraneous geegaws but here, as in so many areas of life, I seem to be in a minority.
